Notes for Arend Heinrich Oberhelman:
Arnold Heinrich Oberhellman was born near Hohnen, in the Westphalian region of Germany in 1788. His parents were Catherine Brinkman and Johann Heinrich Oberhellman. Arnold's paternal grandfather, Johann Arend Oberhellman was his god-father. His grandmother was Margaretha Maria Christian Kettlekamp. He married Regina Margaret Elizabeth Dannebrock November 29, 1816 in Lengerich, Westphalia. She was also born in 1799 in the village of Wersen, near Osnabruck.
Westphalia in the 1820's was undergoing a stressful time. Much of the land had been subdivided to the point that it was impossible to support a family on such small plots. Meat was scarce; usually one hog would supply meat for a whole family for an entire year. Many supplemented their earnings by doing seasonal farm labor in the neighboring Netherlands, or by weaving linen in the home. The growing undustrial revolution was now making the home linen industry unprofitable. In addition, the threat of compulsory military service was always hung over the heads of every German male.
Arnold was a millwright in Westphalia, but he wished to farm in America.
He applied for permission for his family to emigrate in early 1833. They departed April 1933 from Bremen and arrived in Baltimore after a six week ordeal on a sailing ship and traveled overland to the Warren County, Missouri area, near Marthasville. Shortly after reaching Missouri and building a house, Arnold Heinrich died, leaving his wife and four children.
