I am researching the Flood family of Port Underwood New Zealand.
Jerome Nugent Flood arrived in Port Underwood in 1847.
Jerome had left Ireland because of the famine and set sail for Australia.He had not long been in Sydney New South Wales working on a Marino sheep station in March 1847 when Clifford Weld from New Zealand arrived to purchase 3500 Marino sheep for Flaxbourne Station (200 000 acres) in Marlborough New Zealand, which he owned with Fredrick Weld.
An agreement was reached between Jerome Flood and Clifford Weld where Jerome would become drover/shepherd, load and look after the sheep whilst travelling to New Zealand aboard the Schooner Bee and deliver them to Flaxbourne Station.
Jerome was born in 1812 in Dublin Ireland, the son of John and Elizabeth Flood (nee O’Neil) who were married in Dublin in 1808.John was a merchant and had premises on the corner of King and Smithfield streets in Dublin between the Mellows and Fr Matthew Bridges that span the river running through the centre of Dublin city.
John’s father Constantine Flood, of Derlangan House, Athboy, County Meath, (off the main road about 5 km form Athboy, 6.5 km from Trim, 8 km from Nevan, and 45 kms from Dublin) owned a farm of about 72 acres, which had been in the family for over 100 years.The farm contained a fine two storey slated house, containing a drawing room, dining room, hall, kitchen, scullery and four bedrooms.The outbuilding consisted of an inner and outer yard, stables, cow houses, coal house, dairy, barn and car house.There was also a large fruit and vegetable garden.The farm was sold when John’s sister Mary Constance Flood passed away in July 1926.
Elizabeth’s parents Bridget and Con O’Neil were also farmers from the little town of Cormeen just north of Dublin near Drogheda.
Jerome Nugent Flood was christened James Jerome Flood.In a letter from his first cousin John Flood in Australia he talks about John Flood, Jerome’s father changing his name to Nugent before he left Ireland.In further letters it has been established that Jerome Nugent Flood had 9 first Cousins
