|A Brief Description of the Migration of the Family of|
Our line of Tinkle/Tinkel's theoretically originated in Germany.
There were three brothers, Nicholas,Charles, and Henry. Nicholas
and Charles were born in what is now called Germany and Henry was
born in 1790, in Va. It is thought that they came to this country
about 1785. According to some records, they were in
Va.,OH.,IN.,IL.,and IA. Nothing is known of their parents. The
Tinkle name may have derived from the name Dinkle/Dunckel/Dunkle.
Research is actively being done by several Tinkle descendants
around the U.S.
Charles and Henry were both in Clermont Co.,OH and Preble Co.
OH. in the early 1800s. Henry eventually migrated to Carroll Co.,
IN. with his family and is buried in Ball Hill Cemetery, near
Cutler, Indiana. Many of Henry's family are also buried in the
Charles, was an indentured servant at the age of nine, to a
man in New Jersey, and stayed with him until he was 21 yrs. of
age. After that, he traveled around, and according to some
records, went to IL where he died. No one knows of his burial
place or date. Some of his descendants are still in IN. in the
Grant County area. (Marion, IN.) and some can be found in CA.
Nicholas, the third brother, was also in OH. for a time, and
some of his daughters were believed to have been married in Darke
Co., OH. Nicholas eventually migrated to Millersburg,IA. where he
died in 1856, and is buried in Millersburg. Some of his
descendants can still be found in the Des Moines/Iowa City area
of Iowa. There are some 2nd, and 3rd generation TINKLEs of
Nicholas's line that went to Aurora, Mo. about the turn of the
There may have been a fourth brother, James Tinkle, located in OH.very near Henry and Charles. This James was a little older than the rest, but too young to be their father.
Another line of Tinkles has been located in west Tennessee, but do not appear, at this time, to be connected to our IN/IL/IA line. The first known of them is Geo. Tinkle, who married Sarah Proctor in 1790 in Ky. They eventually migrated to the Gibson Co. TN. area and seemed to be closely associated with Davy Crockett. George's descendants can be found in TN/MS/LA/AR/TX/CA. There was also a John Tinkle, whose origin is cloudy at this time. He came out of NC. and was in W. Tn. for a time. His descendants also can be found in the same areas as
