Gerke M. "George" Tjarks and his wife Elise "Eliza" Margaretha Weers Tjarks were born in Germany. They came to America in August of 1881. Elise and Gerke came to Illinois and settled at Kram Station located in Peoria County.While Gerke was a miner,he still managed to buy a small farm in Orion Township, Fulton County, Illinois.
Gerke Tjarks and wife Elise Margaretha had six children, four sons and two daughters.
When Elise died in 1895 the children lived with relatives or friends. Grace Elizabeth Tjarks was 3 years oldwhen her mother died.She was raised by her mothers sister Anna Weers Weers and husband John Weers. George Tjarks, who was eleven when his mother died, made his home with the Behrens family.Ricca Weers Behrens and her husband Henry raised George.
George's brother Willian Peter made his home with his mother's sister Alste Mary Weers Koopman and her husbandHerman.
Brother Henry Tjarks was twelve when his mother died.At the age of 16 he was a carpenter and lived at Mrs. Anderson's boarding house in Kramm Station, Illinois.
Fred Tjarks was 6 years old when his mother died and wasraised by the Henry Ravor family.
Kathrine Sophie Tjarks was raised by her father's sister Etta Margarett Tjarks Andreae and her husband Henry Andreae.

Notes for Henry George Tjarks: Henry George Tjarks was twelve years old when his mother Elise died.When his father Gerke "George"Tjarks died Henry was twenty one years of age. Henry never married. He is buried in St.Peters Cemetery in Glasford, Illinois. Sadly, there is no grave stone to mark his resting place.Henry is buried beside his parents. Henry was born in Peoria county, Edward's Station,Illinois,on December 5,1882.He lived in the Peoria area for most of his first forty three years of life.His parents lived on a farm .When Henry was twelve years old, his mother passed away, and when he was twenty one, his father was killed in a mining accident. Henrywas the oldest child and felt responsible for his siblings.Through ought his life he kept track of his brothers and sisters. Henry never married.He was a carpenter, learning his trade at the age of sixteen,working for Briggs Brothers.He had the reputation of being an excellent carpenter and worked at his trade until a couple years before his death. Henry lived at the home of Mrs. Anderson at Kramm Station Illinois in Peoria County, Illinois where he got room and board. In 1914, he went to Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, where his brother, William, was farming. In 1915, he returned to Illinois, because of the outbreak of World War I involving Canada. In September of1916, went to South Dakota when he arrived he was very ill. Mrs. William Fitzgerald nursed him back to health, during which time she read him the Bible daily.Henry made his home with the Fitzgeralds and his brothers,William and Fred, depending on what area he had a job.Lester Fitzgerald, son of Mr. & Mrs. William Fitzgerald, worked some with Henry. Henry built a beautiful modern large home for the Fitzgeralds on theirplace near Rockham. Many of the houses and barns that Henry built in the Rockham area still reminders of his quality craftsmanship. Henry left Rockham in the 1930's and moved to Indiana to live with his brother William.He remained in Indiana for the rest of his life.Henry carried a bluish scar on his cheek as a result of a mining accident when he was young. Henry died on November 5, 1953, at the age of 70 years, 11months, at the LaGrange Hospital in LaGrange, Indiana.The primary cause of death was Splenic Leukemia doctor was Alfred A. Wade, M.D., of Howe, Indiana. Henry was buried on November 8,1953, at St- Peter's Lutheran cemetery near Glasford,Illinois The funeral services were held at Stone's Mortuary in Bartonville, Illinois and Rev. Martin Bieber officiated. |
