The Bolliger Family from Switzerland, West Virginia and Ohio:Information about Michael James Treacy, Sr.
Michael James Treacy, Sr. (b. September 16, 1852, d. June 14, 1922)
Notes for Michael James Treacy, Sr.:
Michael James Treacy came to America and settled in Louisville, KY. Family said that he came with two other brothers and it is believed that one settled in Pennsylvania and the other in Baltimore, Maryland. He married Catherine Maher (Meagher) and lived in Louisville, KY until 1900 after which he relocated to Indianapolis, IN.
A story circulated in the family for years that when he immigrated to America,
the original spelling of the name was "O'Tracy" and that he changed it by
droppine the "O" and adding an "e" resulting in the last name "Treacy".
There is a family story related to me by my husband, that this Treacy settled
in Louisville, Kentucky when he immigrated to the US and got a job at a meat
packing plant there. I have found no proof of him working in a meat market. I believe he was a gardner and landscaper. It seems that his occupation in Ireland was landscaping.
The following story told to me is also without proof but I thought it was interesting.
It was said that he was becoming finiancially pinched and decided to go to the
bank and ask for a loan. They bank asked him if he had a job and how much he
made. His reply was that he hadn't made any money yet but they kept giving him these pieces of paper every week and when he showed them to the bank manager, they turned out to be a stack of uncashed paychecks. No one had ever explained to him that this was, in fact, money. Having never worked for anything but cash, hehad no idea what these pieces of paper were for. My thoughts on that is that he probably assumed they were some kind of an IOU with a promise to pay for work done.
Michael and his wife moved to Indianapolis, IN shortly after or about the same time as his son Joseph and Joseph's wife Catherine did. He may have lived on Euclid when he died although the cemetery card has his address as 5329 Lowell Ave.

Note: Edward Treacy (Michael's brother) and Johanna Maher are not on the 1900 Census with this family. I would assume that Edward married and moved out. Johanna probably died between 1800 and 1900. She would have been 60 in 1890 and 70 in 1900. I estimate her death between 1890 and 1900.
