John Lowell (b. 1595, d. July 10, 1647)

John Lowell came to New England 1639, with his father, bringingwife and four children. He wa s a man of good education for thoseearly days; was a man of prominence and influence in the c ommunity. February 2, 1640, he was made freeman; was constable December 10, 1641; Deputy in t he General Court March 7, 1644; was appointed May 14, 1645, as one of three Commissioners o f this town to settle small disputes, involving less than 20 shillings, and reappointed, hold ing the position until his death; he held the office of town clerk at his death. While yet i n England he
apprenticed himself in 1619, when 24 years of age, to Richard Baugh of Bristol, England, wh o was a "Glover." He was admitted asa citizen of Bristol, England in 1629. September 7, 1637 , he hadRichard Dole apprenticed to him for seven years. Dole came withthe Lowells to Americ a and became a merchant of wealth and prominence in Newbury, where he settled.
