Excerpt from Newspaper article - From the Champaign News Gazette March 1945:
"Staff Seargeant Donald Fonner 24, has been missing over Germany since March 24, while flying his last mission before coming home.His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Fonner, 113 West Washington street, were informed Thursday.
A letter written March 24 revealed he was preparing to fly his last mission before being relieved. A gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber since last October. He has sent his parents the air medal and first oak leaf cluster with which he had been decorated.
Sergeant Fonner has been in service 18 months and trained at Scott Field and a bomber base in Georgia before going overseas.
He has two brothers in Germany, Corporal Edwin and Corporal Robert Fonner both with the Third Army. Edwin and Donald spent seven days together in England last February, in their first reunion in four years."
