His Obituary:"MADISON CHRONICLE, Saturday, January 31, 1857
We learn that on Saturday last, as Mr. Samuel Melvin, son of B. Melvin, descendant of this County, was on his way from Marion County where he resided, on a visit to his friends in this neighborhood and after having crossed Little Darby Creek at the Old Post Road, his horse stumbled and threw him off.There being one or two other persons riding along side of him, dismounted and raised him to his feet and inquired of him whether he was hurt, to which he answered, no.
A wagon happened to pass the spot where the accident happened, he was requested to ride in it.After riding a few miles he ordered the team to stop and died in a few minutes afterwards.The only injury that could be perceived that he received from the fall was a slight bruise on the face.Mr. Melvin was about 29 years old and leaves a wife and several children to mourn their loss. "

Samuel divorced his first wife Esther for she refused to move to Madison County.Then he married Rachael, who died the same year they were married at only age 19.Then he married Martha J. Cooper who shortly afterwards died. Samuel then remarried his first wife Esther Ann VanFleet on January 13, 1856 in Marion County.
