William Edgar Church (b. December 07, 1841, d. 1917)

William Edgar Church attended schools in Brooklyn, NY, and entered Williams College in 1857, graduating in 1861.Instead of pursuing his law studies, he signed up with the Eleventh New York Calvary , and saw action in Maryland and Virginia, and later in Louisiana where he was attached to the Military Division of West Miss.
In March 1865,he was appointed by President Lincoln to the post of Asst. Adjutant-General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain, and assigned to the Thirteenth Army Corps.In May,his command occupied Shreveport, LA, and received the surrender ofConfederate General Kirby Smith's army.In Aug. he was ordered to New Orleans and assigned to the staff of General Sheridan.He was mustered out the Army in Oct., 1865.
Mr. Churchthen returned to studying law, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1871.He took up the practice of law in Morristown, NJ, where he remained until 1883, when he was appointed by President Chester Arthur(a classmate at Williams College)as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Dakota Territories with residence in Deadwood.Several cases in which he wrote opinions were taken to the U.S. Supreme Court,In every case his judgement was affirmed.
In the Spring of 1890, he moved with his family to Chicago, IL, where he practiced law, residing in Evanston until his death in the fall of 1917.
