William Samuel (W. S.) Robert Lee Watson (son of John William Watson and Mary Elizabeth Moore) was born November 15, 1867 in Crowley's Ridge, Arkansas, and died August 06, 1953 in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas.He married (1) Ella Watson.He married (2) Elvira Priscilla Hooper on August 18, 1891 in McEwen, Humphreys County, Tennessee, daughter of Cyrus Hooper and Martha Cornell Collier.

William S. Watson Dies Here Today
Mourned by 137 Direct Descendants
One hundred and thirty-seven direct descendants are mourning the death of William Samuel Watson, 87, well-known retired farmer who came to Texas in 1897, died at 8 o'clock this morning at his Home, 2912 Walnut Street. Death followed a long illness.
Watson's immediate survivors besides his wife are eight sons and three daughters, fifty grandchildren, seventy-five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Many of these were here on Aug. 18 - 19, 1951, when Mr. and Mrs. Watson observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
Final rites will be observed at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon. The services will be held at the Gray-Sorrells Chapel, with the Rev. V. W. Allen of Lubbock and the Reb. C. B. Garrett of Greenville, officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cementery in Farmersville.
The body will rest at the funeral home.
Son a a Baptist minister, the Rev. John B. Watson (His real middle name was William)and Mrs. Watson, the popular retired farmer was born in Middle, Tennessee (he was really born in Arkansas) on November 15, 1865, and on August 18, 1897, six years to the day after their marriage Mr. and Mrs Watson moved to Texas and settled at Floyd, west of Greenville in Hunt County.
In 1926 Watson moved to Lubbock where he lived until 1940 when he returned to Hunt County, this time settling in Mineral Heights, now a part of Greenville. He lived there a number of years and operated a small farm until he moved to the Walnut Street address.
Watson engaged in farming all of his adult life and retired in 1940. He was active, however in gardening and other tasks about his home in Mineral Heights until about two years ago when his health started failing. Until then he had been in excellent health and often pointed out that during his married life only two members of his family had died, a daughter at the age of seventeen and a grandson who died as an infant. A sincere Christian who closely followed the teachings of the Bible in his everyday life, Watson was a member of Wesley Methodist church and lived in accordance with its tenets. He had been a member of the church since 1906.
Watson and his wife were married on August 18, 1891, at McEwen, Tennessee. She was Elvira Hooper, the daughter of a Methodist minister.
The children surviving Watson are A. C. Watson and M. L. Watson of Greenville; A. T. Watson of Lovington, New Mexico; L. R. Watson of Soper, Oklahoma; W. E. Watson of Gainesville; M. S. Watson of Hale Center, J. A. Watson and F. R. Watson of Lubbock; Mrs. Mattie Garland of Quinlan; Mrs.J. B. Wooley and Mrs. J. R. Woodson of Lubbock.

Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Watson Observe 60th
Anniversary; Have 132 Descendants

Saturday was a highlight in the lives of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. (Will) Watson of Mineral Heights, one of Hunt County’s best known couples. But they put off their celebration until today.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson, who have a total of 132 direct living descendants, were married sixty years ago
yesterday. and today, with a large number of their descendants present, they will observe their anniversary - first with a family picnic at the City Park, then an open house from 4 to 6 p.m., at their Mineral Heights home.
Friends have been invited to call during house hours.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson - he will be 86 on November 16, and she is 78 - have eleven children, fifty
grand-children, seventy great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Five generations will be
represented at today’s celebration.
Another remarkable thing concerning the history of this family is that during the sixty years of married life of Mr. and Mrs. Watson there have been only two deaths in their immediate family. A daughter, Nellie Watson, died in 1915 at the age of seventeen, and their fifty-first grandchild, son of M. L. Watson of Greenville, died in infancy about three years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson were married on August 18, 1891, at McEwen, Tenn., and came to Texas in 1898.
Until 1920 they lived in the vicinity of Farmersville and then moved to the Lubbock area where they made their home until October, 1940, when they came to Greenville.
The fathers of both Mr. and Mrs. Watson were ministers. He was the son of the Rev. John B[sic]. Watson, a Baptist Minster, who was living in the Clinton community in Hunt County when he died. Mrs. Watson, was the former Elvira Hooper, daughter of the Rev. Cyrus Hooper, a Methodist minister.

Both Quite Active
Mr. Watson followed farming most of his adult life, and although he retired a number of years ago, he still cultivates several acres at Mineral Heights, and is quite active. His wife, also active, keeps herself busy with her household duties and finds time to can an ample supply of vegetables and fruits from the garden and orchard. Already has she “put up” more than two hundred cans of food this season.
And it has been but a few times since they have been married that Mr. and Mrs. Watson have called on a doctor to visit either of them because of illness.
It is expected that many of the descendants will be here today to help the couple celebrate. Not all will be however, for many reside at distant points, and other circumstances will prevent others from joining the rest of the family.

W. S. Watson was born on a houseboat. His father ran a ferry across a river. We theorized that it was the Mississippi River in that W. S. was born in Crowley's Ridge, Arkansas which is not a town, but a geographical area along the Arkansas-Tennessee border. It was during this time that W. S. learned to play the violin.
The father of W. S. was John William Watson. It seems that in addition to running the ferry, he was an itinerant Baptist minister.[Watson&Hooper1.FTW]
