Spent much time in the west.Meade, Kansas, where he owned land.
Late in life he returned to the valley of his birth and found a home with his half-sister Eleanor Smith and her husband and his cousin John C. Smith.Charley's violin was often heard at the country dances and occasionally during programs presented at Stone Valley Academy.
Although he had been showing no symptoms of illness, Charles was found dead in bed on Friday morning, August 13, 1909 at the age of 60.His burial was in the United Presbyterian cemetery, with his pastor, the Rev. Horace N. Freeman and the Rev. Stanley S. Bergen of the church officiating.
