2.JACOB DOUGLAS5 WEBB (WILLIAM DOUGLAS4, JACOB WEBB32, WILLIAM WEBB21, JACOB WEBB1) was born July 21, 1861 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and died August 07, 1949 in Hodges, Alabama. He married (1) NANCY LUE HUGHEY Unknown in possibly Hamilton, Alabama, daughter of G. HUGHEY and MARGARET.He married (2) VIOLA LARRENCE (OR VIOLET LAWRENCE) Unknown in Possibly Hodges, Alabama.
Notes for JACOB DOUGLAS WEBB:
Jacob Webb (Jake) had red hair. He was supposedly very tall, about 6'4" - all the Webbs were tall - but after Jacob married Nannie (Nancy) Hughey, from Spartanburg, South Carolina, all the Webbs from that line were short. In 1878,Jacob and his brothers, Melvin and Lindsey, left Tuscaloosa County and moved to Marion County, Alabama. Jake settled near Hodges, near Highway 19. They left their sister Julie in Tuscaloosa with her husband. Jake was a successful merchant, owned cotton gins. He was treated with great deference and respect by the family. I went to Jake's funeral in 1949, in Alabama. He is buried in Holly Spirngs cemetary, in Hodges.
According to family oral historian, Albert Jr., Jacob Webb was very bright. In addition to his cotton gins, he owned a sawmill and several farms. He was also used by the local people as an unoffictial judge to settle disputes because of his intelligence and calming abilities. He was called "The Peacemaker."
Jacob and Melvin were very, very close and spent a great deal of time together.
Jacob had a second wife, Viola (or Violet) Lawrence (or Larrence). She was born March 3, 1868, died Dec. 27, in Holly Springs (Hodges, Alabama.) With Viola, Jacob had 4 more children:
1. Paul Webb, born Feb. 27, 1920, died Dec. 11, 1966, buried in Davis Cemetary, Franklin County, Alabama, near Hodges. Paul married Bessie Davis. Paul hadJunior Webb, born July 17, 1924, died Aug. 8, 1956. He's buried in Davis Cemetary, Franklin County, near Hodges. And Paul had Oval Webb, born Dec. 18, 1921, died July 30, 1980, buried in Daavis Cemetary, Franklin County, near Hodges. And Paul had Joyce Webb, born march 7, 1931, died Oct. 18, 1992, buried in Hamilton, Alabama, City Cemetary.
2. Rosa Webb, born July 28, 1904, died July 4, 1988 in Columbia, Missouri (this might have been the relative that Verla Osborn stayed with after having surgery in Columbia, Missouri). Rosa married Fred Overton, had Hardy, charles, Jack, and Wayne.
3. Cora Alice Webb, born Oct. 23, 1909, died March 23, 1987, buried in Old Lion Cemetary, near Hodges, Alabama. She married Henley Lawler, had Virginia Rose, and Corky.
4. Maude Webb, born August 5, 1907, died June 21, 1963, in Marion County, Alabama, buried in Shottsville, Cemetary. She married Woddie Shotts, had Colleen.
Notes for NANCY LUE HUGHEY:
Nancy Hughey's nickname was "Nannie" Hughey.
Her family was from Spartanburg, South Carolina. She and her sister, Annie, both married Webbs. Annie, who was a schoolteacher, married Melvin, Jake's brother. Two other Hugheys married Abercrombies, although the name is used as "Crombie" on some of the tombstones in the Lebanon, Alabama graveyard near Hamilton, on Route 17. I am assured that it is the same family.
Melvin Webb went to school at the same school Annie taught before he married Annie.
The Hugheys were supposedly very short, black-haired, and when they married into the Webbs, the Webbs became very short-statured.
FROM NOTES I FOUND IN MY FOLDER, WRITTEN BY WEBB COUSIN IN MISSOURI - I QUOTE VERBATIM: "Nancy's sister Annie Hughey, Johnny Hughey, G.A. Hughey, born 30, 1815 died January 27, 1880, Viola V. Hall - Grandpa's 2nd wife - born March 3, 1869, died December 27, 1938." I am not sure if that 1815 date refers to a brother or a father or a mother.

Melvin was the one who wrote the letter to William Douglas Webb's family back in New Jersey. Don't know if William Douglas was illiterate, because at the time, William Douglas was suffering from a loss of sight, which eventually was cured.
Melvin was baptised into the Rocky Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Hamilton at the age of 90. He is buried in Lebanon Cemetary, Hamilton, Alabama.
