Copied from work done in 1978 today, June 24, 1995
Philander Cross was a farmer and a Justice of the Peace. From auction papers after his father, Theophilus' death, Philander was living on the Bounty Land his father was given.Later they lived on the Cross land in Waterford. He also lived in Lake County, Indiana as a young man and taught school there.
He died in 1901 at age 79 in Waterford, and is buried in Pine Lake Cemetery in LaPorte, Indiana. The funeral was held in the Dunkard (Brethren) Church in Waterford.
The era in which he grew up is depicted in a book called "Hoosier Farm Boy" by Tracy W. Redding, published by Dorrance & Company, Philadelphia.Mr. Redding was a neighbor and friend of Philander and Byron, and mentioned them in his book.
Also, at one time a relative named Ben Cross was a minister in the Dunkard Church in Waterford. He was from the "deaf-mute" part of the family".See Jesse Cross (brother of Theophilus) for details on that family.

Notes for MARILLA ANN DAVIS:
Copied from notes made in 1978 today, July 3, 1995
Marilla Ann Davis married Philander Cross on June 15, 1845.She was born in Chautauqua County, New York.At age 12 (in 1836) she came to Indiana in a covered wagon, where she was a resident for 86 years.
It was said by Aunt Doris that she had to chose between a stove and a cow for a wedding present. She chose the cow, because what would she do with a new-fangled stove?
She died June 23, 1933 in Waterford, at age 98 and had a Christian Science funeral.Aunt Doris said of her:"She told marvelous stories of the covered wagon days. She knew the Bible so well, she could tell you where a verse could be found and she was always right".
More from Aunt Doris: "Marilla was almost 98 1/2 when she died and was never senile until maybe the last week when she just wore out.We spent many an hour together and she had a wonderful memory, could tell you word for word what different verses were in the Bible and where to find them, altho she had been blind for years and she couldn't hear unless you talked loud. She could find her way around the house without any trouble and was able to feed herself and go to the bathroom without help.I just loved her and I used to shampoo her hair and comb her hair."
"She (Marilla) lived with Byron (her son) and Mary (Harding) Cross in the house that was moved from the maple trees to where it was when you (Bernice Wollen) lived in it.You, Owen, Carol and I went with Mrs. Tom Herrold to the cemetery the day my great grandma, Marilla was buried.Carol remembers going in the big old touring car and you were all barefoot and ate chestnuts that were in the car and how mad Ma was.We didn't get out of the car.Marilla was your great, great grandmother. Can you remember the 5 generation picture of her, grandpa and my dad and your mother and you?Byron Francis was born Oct. 2, 1849 regardless of what the records show.We always baked him a cake and I can remember it well."
