MichaelBald and 43. MaryScheiner. Notes for John George Binder: The following has been taken from the Marshall County Album 1880, Waterville KS: George was born in the province of Nuremberg near the town of Nellingsheim, Germany, Jan 25 1831, and there spent his childhood and youth. He began to learn the trade of stonemason, but not making the headway financially which he desired, he resolved to emigrate to the United States.Accordingly, he embarked on the sailing vessel, 'John of Prackle', and after a voyage of fifty-two days he landed in New York City, in the month of June. From New York he proceeded to Richland County, Ohio, where he sojourned two years; then pushing further westward, he took up his abode in Mahaska County, Iowa, where he followed his trade some years, and then occupied two years in traveling. He finally decided to locate in Scott County, Iowa and while there he married Catherine, daughter of Michael and Mary (Shiner) Bald.Catherine was born in Germany, and was brought by her parents to America when an infant. A few years later he and Catherine came to Marshall County Kansas.Since that time he has worked very little at his trade, finding farming more dcdongenial to his tastes and health. He may be properly termed a self-made man, having arisen to his present position solely by his own efforts. George's parents were J. George Sr., and Catherine Binder, likewise natives of Germany, and devout members of the Lutheran Church. They emigrated to the United States with their family in 1852, settling in Delaware Ohio, where the father died in 1854.The mother later joined her son, our subject, in Iowa, where she died. The parents of Mrs. Binder, it is believed were natives of Bavaria, and members of the German Catholic Church. The father is deceased, while the mother lives in Scott County Iowa.George and Catherine are the parents of ten living children, namely: William F., John P., Catherine B., George H.,Charles T., Frank B., Edward Otto, Lena M., Amelia A., and Anna M.One daughter Menice, died when one month old.George belongs to the Lutheran Church of his forefathers, while his wife is a member of the German Catholic Church.Politically he supports the principles of the Democratic party. In the spring of 1870 J. George Binder came to Marshall County and purchased 160 acres of slightly improved land, from which he has constructed a good homestead, bringing the soil to a state of cultivation and erecting a substantial stone dwelling, with a frame barn and other structures. He also has a quarter-section south and is looked upon as a well-to-do citizen, who is contributing his quota to the moral and financial interests of the community. Notes for Catherine Caroline Bald: Catherine, a member of the German Catholic Church, converted to the Lutheran faith. She died at the home of her daughter, Anna Wise at Gaylord Kansas.
