Notes for NORRIS GLEN WHEELER: WHEELER Norris Glen (1914-1996) Glen, was born November 5, 1914 in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Marion Norris and Lenna Morgan Wheeler. The family moved to Tulsa where his father was employed as an Architect.Upon completion of the project, the family moved to Miami, Oklahoma, then to Enid, Topeka Kansas and back to Enid where they remained. He attended elementary and secondary school in Enid , enrolled at Phillips University and completed his education at Oklahoma State University. He worked as an electrician and later as a draftsman at Hackney Iron and Steel Company, and also at Franks Machine Co. At the outbreak of WWII, he enlisted in the armed forces in December, 1941 taking his basic training at Fort Sill and was later transferred to Esler Field and then Fort Dix.His Company was sent to England, landing on August 1, 1942.They were attached to the Royal Air Force.His Company was transferred to North Africa with the 12th Air Force in November of 1942.After victory in Africa, the Company was sent to Italy Via Sicily.There, as part of the 15th Air Force, he restored electrical service, water and sewer to the village where the company was based.He was decorated for this and other services above and beyond the call of duty, with a Bronze Star Medal. Having been hospitalized for Malaria, he was rotated home in 1944 and hospitalized at Vance Air Force Base.He married Virginia Morris on February 3, 1945 while home on rotation and was immediately ordered back over seas. Upon discharge, he and his wife settled in Enid and he entered the architectural profession with his father.He was a licensed professional Engineer and also qualified as a licensed Architect.He served for some time as Chief draftsman at Vance AFB. As an architect in the firm of Wheeler & Wheeler, Architects,he was involved in many buildings in Oklahoma.He was a partner in a small flight school and was involved in the Civil Air Patrol as Logistics Officer, Communications Officer and Squadron Commander.He served a term as City Councilman from Ward 3, was on the Zoning Board and the Board of Adjustments.He was involved in Model Railroading, photography, flying and radio as hobbies.He was a charter member of the Sooner Class at Central Christian Church, a member of the Rotary Club, the American Institute of Architects, the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the National Model Railroading Association the Enid Rifle & Pistol Club and the National Rifle Association. 16.CAROLYN JANE4 WHEELER (LENA3MORGAN, JAMESWILLIAM2, JOHN1) was born December 03, 1919 in Miami, Oklahoma, and died December 10, 1986 in Scottsdale, Arizona.She married JOY BURTON BOWERMAN November 19, 1942 in Chicago, Ill. Notes for CAROLYN JANE WHEELER: Carolyn Jane (Kit) Wheeler Bowerman Carolyn was born to Norris and Lena Wheeler on December 3, 1919 while the family was living in Miami, Oklahoma.The family moved to Enid when she was still a small child, and she attended schools there, graduating from Enid High School in 1937. Carolyn attended Phillips University where she majored in Art.She was a member of the Zonta social club and was elected May Queen.While at Phillips, she participated in a national defense plan to provide women pilots to be used, in case of war, to ferry planes to various locations in the U.S.She obtained her private pilots license but never participated in the program. After graduating from Phillips in 1941, she and a student friend, June Albright, moved to Chicago, roomed together and found work.Carolyn took a job as an illustrator and as one of her projects, did all the illustrations for a book titles, A Pictorial Chronology of World Events. In the course of her work, she met a photographer, Joy Bowerman.They fell in love and were married on November 19, 1942.They lived in a walk-up, fourth floor apartment on the north east side of Chicago, near Lincoln Park which has a fine zoo. Jon came along on July 10, 1944 and started out in the Chicago school system.The Bowermans grew tired of the big city and the cold winters, and moved to Scottsdale Arizona in 1953.Joy worked at the Camelback Inn as a free lance photographer, taking photos of the guests in their various activities and selling the prints to them.He had a studio there at the inn, and met a number of prominent national figures in his business.His favorite camera was the 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 twin lens Rollieflex. He also did several assignments for Arizona Highways Magazine and got us interested in Arizona. Kit gradually became ill and eventually died from cancer of the larynx on December 10, 1986. Kit had smoked since her college days.They had no services, her body was cremated and her ashes sprinkled over the Superstition Mountains that she loved so much. Elbert M.
