Notes for ROBERT WILSON:
Rev. War pension W216, Jane Wilson
Service NC and SC, also Indian War.
Robert Wilson was born in 1760 or 1761. He lived with her father Robert Wilson, Sr. on Steele Creek in Mecklenburg County, NC during the Revolution and in 1790 he was living in Lincoln Co. GA, when he enlisted as a Captain during the Indian Wars of that period. In 1795 he moved into the Cumberland Valley and also served against the Indians during that time after which he settled in Williamson Co. TN about 1800. He died in Williamson County in the year 1819 near Harpeth Lick. Robert Wilson married Jane McDowell, a daughter of William McDowell in 1783 or 1784 at the home of her father in Mecklenburg County, NC. She was born 2 Sep 1766 in York County, SC. The applicant also stated that her father, William McDowell served with General Sumter at the battle of Hanging Rock and King's Mountain. In 1783, her father's family moved from SC to Mecklenburg County, NC. Robert Wilson had brothers, Moses Wilson who was born in 1769 in Mecklenburg County NC and Josiah Wilson born October 1766 or 1767. Both were living in Marshall County, TN in 1838. Robert Wilson's father had six sons in the Revolution, to wit.: Joseph Wilson who was born about 1749, Aaron Wilson who was born about 1751 and died about 1833, John Wilson who was born about 1753, James Wilson who born about 1755 and died about 1845, Robert "this claimant" and Samuel Wilson who was born about 1762. The only brother to receive a pension was James Wilson who was living in Bedford County, TN when he applied. Robert Wilson's brother, Zaccheus Wilson was a small boy in 1780. Robert Wilson's uncle, Zaccheus Wilson Sr. was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence (Mecklenburg Declaration). The applicant, Jane Wilson died 10 April 1853.
Our Valiant Men, Louise Lynch, page 189
"About 1792, the sons of Robert and Eleanor (Wilson) moved to Tennessee. Robert Wilson II was said to have been the first man to cross the Cumberland Mountains with a wagon. He married Jane McDowell, daughter of William and Ellen McDowell of York County, South Carolina. Both Jane and her mother went to King's Mountain after the battle and remained several days caring for the wounded soldier. It was said that William McDowell gave his only daughter in marriage because of the bravery that Robert Wilson displayed at King's Mountain. Jane McDowell was a very courageous woman, also molding bullets for Gen. McDowell and his men for the Battle of King's Mountain. Robert Wilson #2 , was born in 1760 and died in 1819. Jane Wilson was born in 1761 and died in 1853. They are buried in a family graveard in the part of the county that is now Rutherford County, between Allisona and Eagleville. Their children were (8): Eleanor, Jane, Mary, Asenath, Cynthia, Martha, Louise, Matilda.
Excerpt from Women of the Revolution, Elizabeth Ellet, 1852, Chapter 20, "Eleanor Wilson" p. 356
Robert (Wilson), the first man who crossed the Cumberland mountains with a wagon, married Jane, the daughter of William and Ellen McDowell, York District, South Carolina. The McDowells were of a brave family. Charles, Joseph and William were in the battle of King's Mountain; Ellen and her daughter Jane heard the firing from their house, and the mother immediately went to the scene of strife, where she remained several days, nuring and attending to the wounded soldiers. She was a woman of remarkable courage and energy. A part of marauders having taken some of her property during the absence of his husband, she followed them, assembling her friends on the way, and soon recovered the booty. Her husband had manufactured power in a cave near his dwelling; but as he could not burn the charcoal there without detection, she burnt it by samll quantities in her fire-place, and carried it to him. In this way part of the powder used at King's Mountain was procured. Young Robert Wilson was with McDowell at Hanging Rock, and it was in reward for his gallant conduct that he gave him his daughter, Jane. In 1832, the mother, then near ninety years of age, removed to Clay County, Missouri. Her daughter, Mrs. Wilson, has lived at Harpeth Lick since 1819, when her husband died. She is eighty-seven years old, yet retains her mental faculties in remarkable vigor. She has one hundred and forty descendants, of whom the Rev. T. W. Haynes of Charleston, S.C. is one, and also, the writer of this notice.(Milton Andrews Haynes)

Deposition made by Milton A. Haynes in 1853 stated Louisa married Zaccheus Wilson (now deceased) and Louisa Hinson, formerly Wilson was entitled to a share of the estate of Robert Wilson, dec.
Bedford Co. Deed Bk. DD, p. 241, Registered 20 Jan 1833
We Zachus Wilson and Louisa Wilson, his wife of Dyer Co. TN appoint Wm. S. Mayfield of Bedford Co. TN their Attorney to oversee their interest regarding the estate of Aaron Wilson, dec. (was this Zacheus' father or their uncle Aaron A. Wilson?)
On the 1840 census, Louisa Wilson was living adjacent to her mother, Jane Wilson,Williamson Co. page 202.
Louisa Hinson made a deposition June 1850 for Jane Wilson, her mother. She was living with her mother, with her four children, in November 1834 and stayed there until about September 1835. Perhaps her name was Louisa Eliza since marriage records indicate such name. It could be she was married to a Nelson before marrying Tilman Hinson, or "Nelson"is a misspelling of "Wilson". Not sure which Zaccheus Wilson this is, but apparently he died before 1834 leaving 4 children. Some of the children on the 1850 census might have been Tilman Hinson's children from another marriage, or they could be her children and the "Wilson" was omitted.
A statement from Louisa Hinson's deposition, June 1850, "I lived with Mrs. Wilson and David G. Jones from Nov. 1834 until his death. Also living there was my sister and her two children and my four children"....."I lived with my mother from the death of Jones till the last of 1836 and didn't live there until Feb. 1838 and then lived there from Feb. 1838 till after Jane Jones married William Nunn" .
Marriage record: Eliza Wilson 25 Apr 1822 Williamson Co. TN to Zaccheus Wilson, bondsman Zacheus Wilson. Could this be the Zachariah Wilson listed on the 1830 census in Bedford Co. TN, page 105. 11001-10001
