INFORMATION ABOUT MARSHALL BONAPARTE HARVIN AS RELATED TO PAT WILLIAMS BY HER GRANDMOTHER, DIXIE HARVIN HAYES
Marshall Bonaparte Harvin was born 12-18-1848 in St Helena Parish, La.His parents were William Harvin and Mary LaMinda Addison.According to his daughter, Dixie Aileen Harvin, Marshall was tall, big boned, had blondish hair and gray eyes.Marshall was a teacher and a farmer.Hetaught school in his early years. In the 1880 census, Marshall is listed as a school teacher, age 32/At age 36 he married Clara Pauline Chapman and assisted her in rearing her younger siblings as both her parents were deceased.Marshall and Pauline had eight living children and always lived and farmed in St. Helena Parish on the "Chapman place," which Pauline inherited from her parents.
Marshall was of the Baptist faith and was a deacon at Rocky Creek Baptist Church. However, in his later years he left the church because of an incident involving a young girl in the church who was pregnant. The members wanted to put her out of the church, but Marshall believed the young girl should be kept in the church and be cared for.The church voted to turn away the young girl, and Marshall left the church.
Marshall was referred to by many people as a real "southern gentlemen."He was very interested in politics and civil affairs.Although his parents owned slaves, Marshall did not believe in slavery and, in fact, broke the law by teaching his parents' slave, Abram to read and write.
When the civil war started, Marshall was only 13 years old.He was too young to enlist but ran away from home and joined the Confederate Army anyway.According to Dixie, his daughter,Abram went with him.Civil war records verify M.B. Harvin was listed as #12530 in Co B Edward Co LAC, Greensburg, La.
When Huey Long was elected governor of La, he appointed Marshall as Chief Custodian at the Old State Capital in return form Marshall's support in the election.Marshall left the farm and lived in Baton Rouge alone for a short time but soon returned home as Pauline wrote to Huey Long requesting that Huey send "Mr. Harvin" home because of her fear he had "roving eyes" and might be led astray.
According to Dixie Harvin, the Harvins were French.Notice Marshall's middle name, "Bonaparte."Dixie had always heard that the Harvins came to St. Helena from South Carolina as surveyors for the Spanish government and that they had a Spanish land grant.
