Notes for Doctor Clifton Key:
Dock C. Key was a soldier in the Confederate Army and was wounded and captured in the battle of Chickamauga near Murphysboro, TN., carried to Rock Island Illinois, a prisoner of war. He died and is buried there. He was a young man, not more than 37 years old at the time of his death. My father, Nicholas Rice Key, was nine years old when Dock left for the Army and could remember grandmother walking beside his horse as he rode away to the War and how she was weeping and praying for his safe return, but like thousands of others, he never came back. Uncle John, who was only 15, joined the Confederate Calvary after Grandpa left, but after he was in a couple of battles, he said he had enough and rode his horse home and forgot to go back. Grandma said they came hunting him several times, but he stayed in the woods and they never did get him or his horse. Grandma said that she would signal him when it was safe to come to the house by hanging a white cloth in a tree near the house. Those were dangerous times and both of my grand- mothers told me most of the things that I know about those historic days. My mother and father could remember a lot too. Mother could remember when they lived in North Carolina and when grandma brought them to Alabama with the train of covered wagons. I have always regretted that I did not write down all that I was told by them.
