>> Family Knowledge & Remembrances
of Michael A. Winney--youngest brother of Kathleen
"Like my brother Arthur and sisters Margaret and Patricia, Kay (Kathleen) was much older than I, by about ten years. My first memory I have of Kay is at a time when she was dating her future husband Basil Rose.I recall them driving up to our old house on Brookhurst St. in a 1937 Ford Coupe. They were married about 1944 and lived in Bellflower, CA.I always enjoyed visiting them there. Basil went to work for Union Oil Co. as a meter reader, I believe. My father had worked for Union for years and helped Basil secure his position.
Kay and Basil were avid campers and frequently had a trip of some sort planned. They were kind to me and bought me my first bicycle. They enjoyed horseback riding and took me along when I was about seven years old.The horse ran away with me holding on and I have, willingly, never mounted one again!
Their first of three sons, Steven was born in 1945.As a young boy he enjoyed my company, probably because we both liked scientific things.I helped him build his first crystal set radio. After a few short years Thomas and Andrew had come along.
Kay bought an old model A Ford coupe which she enjoyed driving around the neighborhood in Bellflower. When she had a problem with the transmission I helped to secure the needed parts for it at the local wrecking yard.We had a lot of fun with that old car.
As a young man I could always count on confiding in my sister and receiving her sage advice.
The Roses built a new home in Yorba Linda, CA in the early 1950s.At that time it was in the country on a large parcel of land.Included on their property was a producing oil well which provided a small monthly income.Basil had earned his BS in Petroleum Engineering at USC and had been promoted to 'Tool Pusher', which was a position of responsibility for the oil drilling operation. After a few years he changed employers and took a petroleum engineering position in Marachibo, Venezuela.
Venezuela became home for the Roses for many years.Sons Steven, Thomas and Andrew received their elementary schooling there as Basil and Kathleen became involved in American Community activities. One by one the boys returned to the U.S. to continue prep school and eventually college as Steven became a physician and Thomas and Andrew attorneys.
Each year the Roses would come home for a month long vacation usually renting a house on the beach at Capistrano Beach. Those were good times with family get-togethersThe Rose boys and their cousins enjoyed fun times swimming and playing on the beach while the adults visited and drank Basil's famous peach daiquiris.Later, the Roses purchased a home on the beach in which they lived the rest of their lives.
In the early 1990's Kathleen's health began to deteriorate and in March 1993, I received a telephone call from Basil informing me that Kathleen had been admitted to the hospital. After arriving in California I visited Kathleen in the hospital two or three times. On my last visit two days before her death, I had an old friend Pat Murphy, with me.Kay was surprised and very pleased to see Pat.She asked him to tell the humorous story of a car purchase he had helped her with some years ago.
So to the delight of Kathleen, Pat began to tell the story of the three of us setting out to purchase a car for son Thomas who was expected home shortly and would need a car to drive back east to school.Murphy was the consummate 'tire kicker' and the bane of salesmen. So, he did the negotiating for a VW Karmon Ghia coupe which Kathleen wanted to buy.At one point the salesman was running alongside our car making last second concessions. As Murphy related the tale, Kathleen chuckled and thoroughly enjoyed reliving the experience again.
Her wonderful sense of humor was intact to the end.I made some smart comment to her and she carefully removed her oxygen mask, and with a twinkle in her eyes said, "Don't you know you are smarting off to a dying woman?"To which I replied, "then it doesn't matter, does it!"We both got a good laugh out of it.
We also had a deeply private and serious last conversation.I miss Kathleen's intelligence, wit, humor and yes, even her sometimes irascible moods."
