| George Franklin Washington was raised by Sarah and Lillie Guyton, ex-slaves. He is listed with Sarah and her other nieces & nephews, and her sister, Lillie, on the 1880 US Census, Thomas County, GA, 637 District GM, Enumeration District No. 82, p. 357-B:NAMERELATIONSHIP AGEGuyton, Sarah6? Her date-of-birth is given as Jan 1810, age: 90, place-of-birth: Georgia. I've been told there was no blood relationship. His father's name may have been George Franklin Washington, Sr. A deed at the court house records grandpa George's name as G.F. Washington, Jr.Grandfather George was born abt. 1860 and was of Indian & African descent. Different dates have been given to me as to when grandpa George died. While playing with a friend when he was a young boy, George was accidentally shot, and a silver plate was placed in his head.A letter written in 1938 to his daughter Susie on her birthday, shows that he was alive on May 15, 1938. He would have been about 78 years old at that time. (The letter depicts a loving father communicating with his beloved daughter, as he fondly refers to her by a nickname: Pat and Patcie.) I believe a death certificate obtained from the Thomas County Health Dept is that of grandpa George. No information is given on the certificate, other than that he was a widower, about age 51. The date-of-death is given as 26 May 1940, death by natural causes. Grandpa George would have been about 80, not 51. This same date is in my grandfather's, Joseph Mack Washington, bible as the date-of-death for a "GL Washington."I presume that these two individuals are the same. The odds of two "G Washingtons" dying on that same date in Thomas County are rather slim, I think! The informant on the death certificate was Joe Rogers, the brother-in-law of George's daughter, Sarah Washington Rogers. [Joe Ann Wood, 05 May 1997]George's granddaughters remember loving to brush his slick black hair. Grandpa George would get a chuckle as they argued about who would get to brush it. He loved to bake his favorite cake, coconut. He would go into town, buy the ingredients, and bake it in the fireplace.Aunt Bertha, his granddaughter, remembers him showing up at their house very early in the morning. He walked with short steps. He would walk from Coon Creek on Hwy 319 to their house in Coolidge, GA. (a distance of at least six miles).A meal would be prepared for him and he'd take a nap and be ready to leave by evening. His son, Sim, would give him some groceries and then drive him back home.Grandfather George, or "pappy George" as he was called, is fondly remembered by his wife's cousin, Mrs. Alleen Hadley Sinquefield, as a very humble, quiet and unassuming man. [Interview by Joe Ann Wood, 12 May 1997]As relayed to me by his granddaughter, Sarah Eloise Washington Johnson, he held several offices at St. Paul MB Church, including secretary of the church. So far, I have been unsuccessful in my attempt to locate the old church records. His granddaughter, Ethel Heard Powell, told me that her mother, Susie Martha Washington Heard (George's daughter), told her when she was growing up he kept the church records and family bible, which contained much of our history, in the den of their home. The family bible is also lost!!--Joe Ann Harvey Wood, 1999The death certificate of Jim Griffin lists Mannie (or perhaps Mamie) Washington as his mother, born in Georgia. The name of his father was unknown. The informant was Jim's son, James Griffin. It can be reasonably assumed that James knew his grandmother's name to have been Washington. I must assume that she was previously married to the father of George Franklin Washington. Since George's name has been recorded as "Jr.", It is my assumption that he and his father shared the same name.My unsubstantiated conclusion:George Franklin Washington was the son of George and Mannie Washington.
