Arthur Hayward Wright (b. May 25, 1896, d. Arthur (Art) was brought up just outside of Chicago, in Wakkegan, Ill. As a school boy, he took violin lessons with Jack Benny in his home town. At the beginning of World War 1, he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard April 14, 1917. After training , he was assigned to the Field Artillery. In preparation to moving to France in 1917, he was stationed at Camp Mills in Garden City. Camp Mills was located where Roosevelt Field shopping center is today.As was the custom to invite the service men to Sunday dinner, Art was invited to the home of Mr. & Mrs. George Linkletter for Sunday dinner. At dinner, he met Dorothy Newbold, daughter ofRev. and Mrs. Charles Newbold, Rector of Christ Church, Manhasset. They corresponded during his time in France. Upon returning to the States, he was discharged on May 10, 1919, he courted Dorothy. They married about 1920. They had three children, Robert Newbold 1922, Arthur Jr. 1924 and John Charles 1930.Art worked selling industrial sandpaper in the New York City area.In 1922, he decided to start a hardware store in Manhasset.The store flourished for many years, selling to estates, businesses and private homes. The homes were of the up-scale type. In the middle 1960's, Art retired and his three sons carried on the business. Art was active in the American Legion, being it's forth Commander, was on several Bank boards for many years and was active in community affairs. In his early yearsof business, he had time to coach the high school football team, the first coach, I think. Art had many friends and enjoyed playing the violin with his group. Others in the group played piano, accordion etc. He died of cancer of the prostrate in 1961.
