William Hooper (b. Abt. 1617, d. December 05, 1678)William Hooper was born Abt. 1617 in Reading, London, England, and died December 05, 1678 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Marshall on March 04, 1645/46 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts, daughter of Thomas Marshall and Alice Willey.
Notes for William Hooper:
On 13 Jul 1635 the ship "James," sailing from the port of London, England for New England brought amoung its passengers two young men, one William Hooper age 18 and Thomas Marshall age 21.This William Hooper is destined to become the progenitor of the Hooper families in America. He resided at Reading, Massachusetts in 1644, as town records show and may have been there before. He was admitted a freeman of the colony 10 May 1648, which implied that he had previously joined the church. His wife Elizabeth was also a member. It has been conjectured that she was a sister of Captain Thomas Marshall, because William Hooper called Captain Marshall "brother", and they may have been children of Thomas Marshall, Senator of Lynn, 1638.He resided in the part of old Reading which is now included in Wakefield. He owned considerable land, and also carried on the business of a weaver. His wife, Elizabeth Woodruff Marshall is believed to have past away from child birth with her Elizabeth. He married a second wife, named Ruth, of whose connections there is no intimation in the records.
In the company of Captain Daniel Henchman, raised at Boston from that town and the neighborhood for service in the conflict with the Indians known as 'King Philip's War", the name of William Hooper appears in 1675, and in the company of Captain Wadsworth in 1676; as William Hooper, Senior was about sixty years old at that time, we cannot suppose he was that soldier, but there is a probability that his son William was that person.
The town records show assignments of lands to him from time to time, and county records show transfers of lands by him, one of them signed also by his wife Ruth in relinquishment of her dowery, 14 Dec 1644.
Before finishing his rather brief life in the "new world" he made his will.As he had experienced the change of focus which threescore years usually brings, and as he had not, probably, suitable glasses, he was obliged to depend on some friend to write the will, and he made his mark instead of writing his name, as we do not doubt he had formerly done.He died 5 Dec 1678, aged 61.
