THOMAS (1) ARNOLD, the emigrant bapt. in England 18 Apr 1599, d. Smithfield, R.I. Sept 1674; m(2) Phebe, dau. of George Parkhurst.He was the son of Thomas Arnold and his 2nd wife of Cheeseborough, Dorsetshire, England and a half brother to William.He left London 15 May 1635, to sail for Virginia in the "Plain Joan."The ship's record says he was 30 years of age and brought 3 children.He came to Watertown from Virginia and settled there.Sold land to his brother-in-law, Geroge Parkhurst and moved before 1661 to Providence, R.I.
He was made freeman of Mass. 13 May 1640.In Oct 1651, he was fined 20 S. by the Court for offense against the law concerning baptism.On 2 Apr. 1654, hew was fined 10 L for neglecting public worship for 20 days.On 2 Apr. 1655, he was fined 10 L for neglecting public worship for 40 days, and his land was levied upon to pay it.He seems to have inherited his sturdy independence from his ancestors.
Thomas Arnold was able to trace his ancestry back through 17 generations to Ynir King of Gwentland A.D. 1100, who was a direct descendant of Wessex, who was King of the Britons from 688 to 728.
