Notes for Charles John Challess:
The following information came from a letter from Paul Foster, son of Marjorie Challess.
"According to my mother, he was destined to become a footman but ran away to sea when about 15, joining the Royal Marines. He served with them until World War I.In about 1900 he took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China, so he may not have been back in the UK for the 1901 census. Then he was stationed at Walmer/Deal.Once a Colour (not Color) Sergeant (the RM equivalent of Warrant Officer in the Army) he was several times offered a commission, but did not take it up because in those days it would have meant forgoing his long-service pension. He was detached to Cambridge in about 1915; I didn’t know about the Hill Road school, but got the impression that he worked with the Officer Training Corps at the university.
On retirement from the military, Granddad became Head Porter (not Bursar) of St. Catherine’s College Cambridge.Quite a grand job: chief of all the college servants. He naturally wore a dark suit and a bowler hat.I believe he was there for many years – through WWII.He had a strong voice and sang in the choir of a church off Hills Road till he was 90.He died in Cambridge on 26 February 1962.I was at the funeral with my parents; so were my uncles Jack and Alfred.Jack and his wife Wynne (see below), who had long lived with Granddad, got the house and contents, together valued at £1600;Marjorie and Uncle Alfred shared the residue, receiving £218-7s-10d each."
