Notes for Neil McCoy:
Neil McKoy (Neal McKoy, Nell Mekcoy). The oldest record of Neil McKoy,
found to date, would be his Revolutionary War Pension File, #S42951,
located at the National Archives in Washington, DC Neil's service
covered the years 1779 through 1783. Neil enlisted in 1779 at
Stoutinham, in the County of Suffolk, St of MA, under Captain Winthrop
Sergeant, in Colonel John Crane's Regiment of Artillery, in the MA
line. He enlisted as a private, served two and a half years, and was
regularly discharged. In 1781, he enlisted again, in the same company
and regiment, serving as a gunner in 1782 and 1783. Neil was honorably
discharged on 22 December 1783, at West Point, NY, "due to the
occasion of the peace."
A certified copy of Neil's marriage record, obtained from the Town
Clerk of Foxborough, MA, is the next oldest record found to date. Nell
Mekcoy, of Ware, MA, was married to Meheteble Baker, of Sharon, MA, on
6 December 1784. They were married at Foxborough, MA by Swift Payson,
Esq., of Foxborough, MA.
Neil was born c 1754, his place of birth listed as Scotland in D.A.R.
records. Meheteble Baker, was baptized 8 March 1759, in Stoughtonham,
MA, a daughterof Elijah and Hannah Puffer Baker.
"Vital Records of Sharon, MA, to the Year 1850, page 46," and "Ware,
MA, Births, Intentions, Marriages, Deaths, Vol.1, page 10," indicates
the marriage record and also the births of the children to Neil and

According to the "History of Ware, MA," by Arthur Chase, published in
1911, Neal McCoy, appears on the Assessors List, dated 16 Feb 1787,
under "Miscellaneous Town Subjects," on page 247.
Other dates of importance to the record of Neil McKoy, would be as
1790-MA Federal Census, p.126, Town:Ware; County: Hampshire; Head of
Household: Neel McCoy; the household consisted of 1 free white male,
16 or over, including the head of household; 4 free white males, 16
and under, including the head of household; and 1 free white female,
including the head of household.

1810-Neil McCoy NYS Federal Census, Herkimer Co,page 426
9 Apr 1818-Request for Pension filed. At the time of filing, Neil
stated that by reason of his reduced circumstances in life, he was in
need of assistance from his country for support. He, at the time,
resided in the Town of Deerfield, Co of Oneida, NY and was 63 years of
age. The petition was signed, "Nell McKoy."
9 April 1818-Name inscribed on the Roll of New York, at the rate of
$8.00 per month (effective this date).
18 April 1818-Certificate of Pension issued. Arrearages to 4 September
1818 was noted. 4 27/31 months, for a total of $38.96.
8 Sept 1820-Oneida Co, Court of Common Pleas. This article appears to
be his court appearance at the granting of the pension. Neil's age is
listed as 66 yrs, and he states his occupation as farmer, but "not in
such health to labor." Residing in the household at this time, is his
wife, Mehitable, age 64, "in as good health as is usual at her age,"
and that of daughter, Mehitabel, age 18, "in good health and able to
earn her living."
1828-29-Utica City directories. Directories list Nell McKoy, residing
on the Minden Turnpike, east of East Street, Utica, NY.
1830-No Federal Census Record found for Neil McKoy.
1830-NYS Federal Census, City of Utica, Oneida Co, indicates a
"Baker/Becker" (depends upon deciphering of name) McCoy, residing in
Utica, and in residence there, a man between the age of 70 and 80.
This could possibly be Neil McKoy, however, no substantiation has yet
been found for the theory.
It is presumed that Neil McKoy died in the City of Utica, after 1830,
and is buried there. However, no record of death or place of burial
can be found as yet.
The above information regarding our Revolutionary War ancestor, Neil
McKoy, has been compiled as accurately as possible. There always
exists, however, the possibility of misinformation or human error.
