Notes for Sir Knight Richard IV De Clare:
Gloucester, Richard de Clare, 7th Earl of, 8th Earl Of Clare, 6th Earl Of Hertford
b. Aug. 4, 1222
d. July 15, 1262, Eschemerfield, near Canterbury, Kent, Eng.
the most powerful English noble of his time. He held estates in more than 20 English counties, including the lordship of Tewkesbury, wealthy manors in Gloucester, and the great marcher lordship of Glamorgan. He himself acquired the Kilkenny estates in Ireland and the lordship of Usk and Caerleon in south Wales, making him the greatest lord in south Wales; in Glamorgan especially he was almost an independent prince.
Son of Gilbert de Clare (the 6th Earl), Richard succeeded to the earldoms in October 1230. He refused to help King Henry III on the French expedition of 1253 but was with him afterward at Paris. Thereafter he went on a diplomatic errand to Scotland and was sent to Germany to work among the princes for the election of his stepfather, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, as king of the Romans. About 1258 Gloucester became a leader of the barons in their resistance to the king, and he was prominent during the proceedings that followed the Mad Parliament at Oxford in 1258. In 1259, however, he quarreled with Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester; the dispute, begun in England, was renewed in France, and he was again in the confidence of the king. This attitude, too, was only temporary, and in 1261 Gloucester and Montfort were again working in concord.
He was a ward of Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent and Justiciary of England, whose daughter, Margaret, to the displeasure of King Henry III, Richard afterwards married clandestinely, but from whom he was probably divorced, for we find the King marrting him next year to Maude, duaghter of John De Lacie; in consideration the said John de Lacie paid to the crown 5000 marks and remitted a fine or debt of 2000 more. His Lordship appears to have been a very distinguished personage in the reign of Henry III, and was one of the chief nobles present in westminister Hall, 40th of Henry III, 1256, when Boniface, Archbishop of Canterbury, with divers other prelates, pronounced that solmen curse, with candles lighted, against all those who should henceforth violate the Magna Carta.
Sir Richard de Clare, Earl of Hereford and Gloucester, born Aug. 1, 1222, died July 15, 1262, married Feb., 1237, Maud de Lacie, daughter of Sir John de Lacie, Surety for the Magna Charta, Earl of Lincoln, 7th Baron Halton, and hereditary Constable of Chester, and his wife, Margaret, only daughter and heiress of Robert de Quincey, and his wife, Hawise, daughter of Hugh de Keveliock, 5th Earl of Chester, son of Saire de Quincey, Surety for the Magna Charta, and his wife, Margaret de Bellomont, descended from Henry I, King of France.

Sir Ralph Mainwaring, Knight, son and heir, was Justice of Chester in the latter part of the reign of Henry II. He married a natural daughter of Hugh de Keviloc, Earl of Chester. (There is controversy on this point; some claim she was daughter of a first wife.)
Notes for Amicia De Meschines: Amicia married Ralph Mainwaring. There has been much discussion about her, some claiming she was by a first wife and some that she was illegitimate. Sir Peter Leicester and Sir Thomas Mainwaring having many arguments over it. There are 14 books about it and eventually the matter was referred to the judges. At an assize, held at Chester in 1675, the controversy was decided with Thomas Mainwaring that she was legitimate. Sir Peter Leicester claimed if she had been legitimate she would have ranked with her 4 sisters in inheritance, which she did not. See Mainwaring line No. 5 for the line on to Robert Abell. Others that as she was half sister to Randle III she did not inherit. |
