Zvaniga, Zwaniga, Swaniga, Swaniger Family TreeUpdated September 2, 2009 | As a child, I would often be asked to spell, pronounce, and provide the origin my family name. It seemed that thousands of time I have had to explain the name is Germanic so the ZV- is pronounced SW- and then I would have to clarify why there were different ways of spelling the name within my family. My Aunts, Uncles (even though they were brothers), and cousins: many of them spell our family name different. I heard many reasons for the name changes: a requirement of the Canadian Army during the second world war; a priest's slip of the pen; they were just tired of pronouncing the name to others, and the list goes on. This situation, and the confusion it creates, is a couple of reasons why I have taken steps to record, as much as possible, our family history. A family record is more than names, dates, places, and events; it's about people, who they were, what they did in their lives, how they shaped ours. Each of us knows something about our relatives. We love telling stories about their achievements and exploits. We have a fondness for specific family members we found enduring. Yet what we know about our family often does not go beyond those members we actually know, or knew, in our own lives. Few of us have been lucky enough to know our Great-Grandparents. To help in the compilation and preservation of our family history, I'm asking you to participate. You can help by providing me with as much information on family members as you can. This could include photos, copies of birth certificates, marriage licences, death certificates, wills, vital statistics; such as, dates, one's history, hair and eye colour - anything that helps paint a better picture of our family so we can pass it on to our children. It is my hope that when we are done we will have a permanent record of our family, one that is as unique and full of life as is all the members of the ZVANIGA, ZWANIGA, SWANIGA, SWANIGER family. Any information would be appreciated and I am also willing to share the information I have. Thank you Spike Zvaniga |
